The song was the lead single from her self-titled debut album and was released in 1988. The song rocketed into the US top 10 after Tracy Chapman performed it at the Nelson Mandela Birthday Concert.
The song features a simple yet distinctive fingerpicking pattern in the verses and then strummed chords during the chorus. The chords needed are C, G, Em and D.
